WHAT IS MEDITATION

WHAT IS MEDITATION

Meditation is when you concentrate on one object, giving it your full attention. This is called single-minded attention. Students sometimes tell me they want to meditate. I ask them, ‘why?’ They are often astonished by my question. I say, ‘There are many meditations, having different purposes. Meditation will take you somewhere. So, first you will have to understand where you want to go. What is your objective in life? What is your vision?’

Personally, I think we should have an idea of what we want in life. Knowing this, we can choose a specific meditation practice. When we concentrate, and put forth our full attention on one object, this is the direction we go and immerse ourselves in.

There can be many reasons why someone wants to meditate. Generally, people want to be less stressed, feel more centered, be happier. Fewer will have the desire to grow spiritually, to realize oneself on the soul level and to return to our soul’s roots. Whatever objective you choose to focus on, let it be one that lifts you up and helps to raise your consciousness.
